New Covid-19 Tracing Tool Appears on Smartphones

A Covid-19 tracing software tool has appeared in the settings of both Android phones and iPhones as part of an update of their operating systems. The "exposure notification" tool is switched off by default, and is not a tracing app itself. It enables an app to run in the background while still using Bluetooth. This lets the app measure the distance between two handsets - and then alert the phone owner if someone near them later tests positive for Covid-19. In the UK there is currently no available contact-tracing app. The update has caused some confusion, with people querying the new addition to their handsets on social media. "This is not a new app but is an extra element added to the phones' operating systems to enable approved developers to build apps that can potentially warn of proximity to infected individuals," said computer scientist Prof Alan Woodward, of Surrey University. Officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Saturday took sample from the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for Coronavirus test. Samples taken by the NCDC officials alongside that of Tinubu were those of his late Chief Security Officer, Alhaji Lateef Raheem and other close aides. Tinubu’s media adviser, Tunde Rahman, who confirmed the development, said the APC leader submitted himself for the test as a precautionary measure. Raheem, Tinubu’s late Chief Security Officer was said to have died of complications arising from diabetes and high blood pressure in Lagos last Friday. He was buried the same day according to Islamic tradition. The University of Lagos Medical Centre has been temporarily shut down its operation as a result of exposure to COVID-19. In a statement issued by the hospital’s management, the decision was imperative to avoid a possible further spread of the virus. The rejection was as a result of the thorough inspection of the grains by the committee on distribution of relief materials at the warehouse where they were kept. The Federal Government has tendered an apology to Nigerians for violating the order on social distancing during the burial of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, in Abuja on Saturday. Secretary to the Federation (SGF) and the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, tendered the apology on Monday during the daily briefing by the task force. “The PTF recognises, regrettably, the unintentional violation of the principles and protocols that form the core of our message to Nigerians at the funeral of the late chief of staff,” the SGF said. “These principles, for emphasis, include the guidance provided on mass gatherings, social distancing, personal hygiene, and restriction of movement. Senate orders closure of LAUTECH Senate orders closure of LAUTECH   The Senate of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has in compliance with the  directive of the Federal and it's owner States Governments, ordered immediate closure of the Institution. Senate at its emergency meeting held on Friday, March 20, 2020 deliberated on the on-going University examinations and the state of affairs of the Country as it affects the University, especially the Coronavirus pandemic, and decided that the University be shut down with effect from Monday, March 23, 2020 for a period of one month. Consequently, it instructed that all examinations that are about to be concluded should end on or before Sunday, March 22, 2020, while others be suspended till further notice.
