EXPULSION AND SUSPENSION OF FIFTY THREE (53) STUDENTS
The Beasts We May Build.
Dear sir,
I am shaken by my decision to write this letter as myself I am not a fairy godparent for examination malpractices. But in sobriety that this has left me, I'm writing to beg for your mercy on your recent decision to suspend and expel my fellow students who have been found guilty of and sanctioned for examination malpractices and misconducts.
Soliciting and seeking your lenity makes me feel silly knowing you have made the right decision to blow off examination malpractices and misconducts in LAUTECH. Your zero tolerance is respected.
But sir, I beg you for I still believe more in the fortuity of having mercy on them than the upheaval these sanctions could cause to their future and our unfettered nation, Nigeria.
Sanctions are right and fine but we should also be genuinely concerned about the reverberations that could result from expelling students out of school — As there are many marlians on the streets already.
When sanctions as heavy as expulsions and four semesters suspensions are the punishments for examination malpractices and misconducts, many a Nigerian student is known to court the least of getting smarter to escape capture and sanctions.
The beasts we may build to our nation come from the effect of expulsion as it rather increases the students' aggression, antisocial behaviour, lower intellectual achievement, poorer quality of school-student relationships, mental health problems (such as depression), and diminished moral internalisation. (Ministry of Social Development, Ora, 2006).
I plead that these students are rather corrected than cast out to the the world we are still trying to change. Because even in the long run a criminal would die by hanging he would have left alive enough depravity the world would be taking time to recover from. Thus, at such prevention is better than cure.
These students do have plans for the future and this mistake should not take away their dreams.I believe what they need now is correction and the hope that they still have a chance of achieving their goals.
LAUTECH is renowned for producing the movers and shakers of the world, and in just less than five years, we could add some of these fifty three (53) students to this league.
They will need to try more, read and study more. But most of all right now, they need
hope! Please, bring them back to class.
Thank you for your time in reading this. I wanted to speak from my heart and hope you
will forgive the informality of this letter.
All students who have the chance of reading this should then have witnessed the consequence of examination malpractices and misconducts and should therefore desist from such.
